If you’re not careful, self-doubt can sabotage your recovery. To the rescue: These steps can help boost your confidence, tame your inner critic and make you feel good about you and your new sober life.
- Write yourself an uplifting note. We’ve all had someone give us a compliment or share a kind word that made us feel better. Even if no one is around, there’s one person that is always there to lift you up – that’s you. Take time to write yourself a little upbeat note. Tap into your positive side and tell yourself that you can do this! Try listing some things you’ve already accomplished in life and in recovery.
- Listen/read positive material. Whether your read part of a motivational book or quick inspirational quote or listen to an uplifting podcast or music, do something daily that will lift your spirit and motivate you to stay positive and push through.
- Stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone’s recovery is different and comparing yourself will only make you feel frustrated or inadequate. Take pride in your own progress and all of the little and big steps you’ve taken on your personal journey toward sobriety.
- Write in a gratitude journal. At the end of each day, take a few minutes to dwell on what you do have (rather than what you want or lack in life). Gratitude can help put you in a positive mindset, which will translate into feeling good about you!
- Nurture your biggest fans. Ask yourself who are the family and friends who bring out the best in you and who make you feel confident about you? Once you’ve identified them, work to nurture and treasure those relationships. Remember, recovery is much easier when you have a solid support system in place.
