BRC Men Give Back

Men’s program at BRC Recovery On April 30th I had the pleasure of watching the residents of the Men’s program at BRC Recovery participate in a community service project. We spent all day at a Habitat for Humanity build-site in Manor, TX.  The men tackled all types of job, from picking up trash and painting cabinets to putting up fences and framing windows. Before arriving at the build-site, I knew there would be varying degrees of confidence and different skill sets among the residents. However, I was not prepared to witness the evidence of transformation in each of these men’s lives […]

Enslaved to Drugs

…“though he came to scoff, he may remain to pray.” –Big book, pg. xxxii Recently, the Austin Stone Community Church Story Team published an article written about one of BRC Recovery’s alumnus, Alex. His story, “Enslaved to Drugs”, is one which is  heard too often. Alex’s drug addiction began in high school after a string of injuries ended his possibilities for a college football career. He attempted sobriety many times, but each attempt was quickly met by relapse and mounting disappointment until eventually he checked into BRC Recovery in January 2013. While he was a resident at BRC, Alex started […]

Home Is Where The Heart Is

12 Step Meetings Earlier last year, I made the uncanny prediction to my husband that it looked like 2014 was shaping up to be a year of busy travel. He quickly responded his displeasure at my remark. Last year did turn out to be a very busy year, personally and professionally, and I spent a fair amount of time away from home. Some of the conferences I attended had open 12 Step meetings every morning before the events of the day began in earnest. I always did my best to make these meetings when I could. I find it beneficial […]

The Flying Trapeze

What’s the lesson here? So today is the day. For my birthday my friend gave me a two-hour flying trapeze lesson. She and I will go together, in just a few hours and brave the wire. A mixture of nerves and excitement, I find myself wondering… what’s the lesson here? My mind wanders to yesterday when my family and I had one of the busiest Saturdays on record. After a 5:30am wake up call, and a 7:00am start time for the playoff games in my son’s pee wee football league on a 42-degree field, followed by an 11am offsite meeting […]

Long-term Sobriety: Extended Care After Alcohol Treatment In Austin

Programs and Theories to help people stop drinking There are many programs and theories out there designed to help people stop drinking. The 12 Step programs and treatment centers all have the goal of helping people with a drinking problem to achieve long-term sobriety. While their intentions are honorable, the reality is that many of these programs don’t come anywhere close. Research by the National Institutes of Health The U.S. National Institutes of Health focuses on all elements of drug and alcohol abuse. They frequently release information, advice and guidance on the effectiveness of drug and alcohol treatment. They have […]

Hi, my name is Marsha Stone, and I’m the CEO of BRC Recovery located just outside of Austin, Texas. BRC Recovery was founded in 2006 by a man named Mark Houston, who after working in treatment for 20 plus years, had a vision for a Recovery Center, who had a vision for an extended-care program. Mark was known worldwide as a 12 Step speaker, as a spiritual leader, as a visionary. And he started this miraculous place and developed this culture of recovery that maintains today. BRC Recovery is a 90-day residential program designed for men and women who are […]

Bullet Points and Bottom Lines

Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe….Voltaire To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible…Thomas Aquinas     I am not a great storyteller. I am more comfortable speaking directly- in bullet points and bottom lines. But there is one story I heard not too long ago that I really loved, and it really resonated with me. It goes something like this… We have all been to the circus and watched the acrobats walk across the tightrope. It is nerve-wracking to watch someone […]

Being Still

Being Still And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone ~Big Book, page 84 Be still and know that I am ~Bible, Psalm 46:10 My trust in a higher power that wants me to survive and have love in my life, is what keeps me moving forward… ~Kenny Loggins At a recent speaker meeting and BBQ at BRC Recovery I had the pleasure of listening to an incredible story of experience, strength and hope delivered by a young woman I have grown to know and admire. I was struck by her courage and enthusiasm, as well as her honesty and […]
