Opportunity To Do Some Service Work My name is Ricka Messerve, I am the Women’s Segue Supervisor. I have been sober for over six years and a loyal employee for BRC for nearly five years. I was recently given an opportunity to do some service work within my own family. At the request of my elderly Mother she asked if I could come to her house and assist her after she had knee replacement surgery. Naturally I accepted the challenge. This also has an added blessing… You see, when I was active in my addiction I gave birth to a […]

Anniversaries and Old T-Shirts

Mark Houston Recovery I was cleaning out my closet the other day and my eyes rested on all the work shirts I have. Short sleeves, long sleeves, button downs, hoodies, even tie dyes- all with Mark Houston Recovery or Benchmark Recovery Center monogrammed smartly on them. When I look at those shirts I am reminded of years of hard work, love and sacrifice. Tears of joy and tears of sorrow have been cried in those shirts. August 2009 I was pulling into the HEB on Hwy 620 in Round Rock. I received a text from Mark Houston inquiring whether I […]

SpirMal

Overheard from a friend a few weeks ago, “My SpirMal went shopping today!” That caught my attention…SpirMal? What is that? I was quickly educated… SpirMal, as in, short for Spiritual Malady. Got it. I might not have known the term but I sure know something about spiritual malady. Restless, irritable, discontented. Not quite sure where I want to be but certain it isn’t where I currently am, and moreover, just generally annoyed. An old friend of mine described the untreated alcoholic personality as ‘slightly unhappy all the time.’ Kind of describes me the last few days… Seriously, has anyone else […]

After The Storm

Hearts are broken “The alcoholic is like a tornado roaring his way through the lives of others. Hearts are broken. Sweet relationships are dead. Affections have been uprooted. Selfish and inconsiderate habits have kept the home in turmoil. We feel a man is unthinking when he says that sobriety is enough.” -Big Book, pg. 82 It was the Sunday afternoon after severe weather roared through Austin, TX where the BRC Recovery Residences are located.  The area was a mess, as you could imagine.  I just finished lunch when I heard the sound of a leaf blower.  I looked out the […]

The Flying Trapeze

What’s the lesson here? So today is the day. For my birthday my friend gave me a two-hour flying trapeze lesson. She and I will go together, in just a few hours and brave the wire. A mixture of nerves and excitement, I find myself wondering… what’s the lesson here? My mind wanders to yesterday when my family and I had one of the busiest Saturdays on record. After a 5:30am wake up call, and a 7:00am start time for the playoff games in my son’s pee wee football league on a 42-degree field, followed by an 11am offsite meeting […]

Hooked On Sobriety: The Real Reason This Texas Alcohol Rehab Works

Alcohol and other drug rehab centers are sometimes misrepresented by the media and press. We are constantly confronted by celebrities who are in and out of rehab, each stating that they were unable to get the help they needed. Not really understanding the nature of addiction, the general public can see the indulgent lifestyles of many celebrities and assume their problems and frequent relapse is due to their easy access to drugs, alcohol and money, plus the revolving door of rehab. As professionals in the rehabilitation business, we know that no one is exempt from the devastation of addiction if […]

Maladacious

I have heard the terms malady, spiritual malady, internal condition, untreated alcoholism, but until recently I had never heard the word “maladacious“! Even as I type, my spellcheck doesn’t recognize it. My friend, in defense of her use of the word said to me- its in urban dictionary – look it up! Restless, irritable, discontent- words and experiences and feelings common to most alcoholics and addicts. My belief and my experience show me that the illnesses of alcoholism and addiction manifest in mind, body and spirit. But how do we address these manifestations? And how can such a complicated and […]
