WHAT TO EXPECT IN OUR INTENSIVE HEALING PROGRAM
Programming seeks to heal clients from within by improving spiritual wellness while laying the groundwork for permanent recovery. Our curriculum fuses the 12-step program with clinical programming to help clients nourish their bodies from substances while addressing the underlying issues that lead to substance use, such as trauma, family dynamics, and self-defeating behavior patterns, in individual and group therapy sessions.
Each day is fully scheduled with programming that discusses topics including but not limited to:
- Recovery from trauma
- Family of origin patterns
- Shame
- Attachment styles
- Developing healthy relationships and intimacy
Our goal at Makana Path is to heal old belief systems that are limiting clients in multiple areas of our lives. The intensive healing program takes a holistic approach that utilizes a combination of clinical and complementary therapies, including:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- 12-step education
- Individual assignments
- Physical exercise with a certified personal trainer
- Healthy meal preparation
As a part of the BRC Healthcare, we are proponents of the 12-step program. However, our intensive healing program is not 12-step based. Patients have the opportunity to participate in 12-step education, but our programs are primarily clinically-driven.
RELAPSE PREVENTION
A relapse is best defined as a return to addictive behaviors that previously lead to an addiction. Relapse is a common part of recovery, as there is no straight line of the process but practicing healthy coping skills. Even after treatment, multiple studies have shown that recovering patients are 60% more likely to relapse. This can make the journey more painful, but the struggling person must endure, seeing this as a learning moment. With a proper understanding of relapse, a patient has an opportunity to combat their triggers and react more efficiently.
It’s important to remember that a relapse prevention plan is resourceful but won’t solve all of the issues. Maintaining your focus on recovery and identifying your triggers are the primary goals for a relapse prevention plan. Patients can anticipate scenarios where they would be exposed to use and craft strategies to overcome their impulsive behaviors. The intense healing from this process could prepare the patient for practical situations. Substance use disorders are influenced by underlying issues that a patient must address for recovery to take place.
Intense healing therapy practices aim to target the obstacles with addiction. Relapses usually occur in stages, best described as:
Emotional Relapse
This could begin with a recovering individual slowly isolating themselves from others, such as not showing up to group meetings. This withdrawal may not even be conscious; the individual could begin experiencing anxiety and hopelessness but won’t be transparent. For example, if you notice a recovering loved one opting to talk about their feelings or generalized responses, this could be a sign of emotional relapse. This is challenging because it can be subtle to notice, but earnest attention is needed.
Mental Relapse
This stage is usually when thoughts of use begin to invade the mind once again. The urge to use can brew conflicting feelings, making the isolation worse for those in recovery. Imagine a volcano that erupts with no warning — these thoughts are old patterns fighting to stake their claim. Those struggling with relapse might visit places of use or meet up with friends who enable the behavior.
Physical Relapse
Physical relapse is often recognized as the final stage of relapse, typically marked by contact with the addictive substance. This could be a drink after hours when everyone is asleep or scoring a few pills for a “just in case” situation. By engaging in the substance just once, it jeopardizes the entire recovery process. This is noted as the most difficult stage because an individual struggling might assume the key is to say “No,” despite the clutch of the relapsing.
WHATS THE 12 STEP PROGRAM IN RECOVERY?
First developed by Alcoholics Anonymous in 1938 by founder Bill Wilson, The 12-Step Program is a thorough plan designed to treat compulsive behaviors and addictions. With foundations in Christianity, the 12-Step Program is structured around the member submitting to a higher power to commit to the healing process. This plan is beneficial due to the support model that allows other members to guide the recovery process. The 12-Step Program can be very transformative for those struggling with addiction, but more secular approaches are available.
Spiritual healing therapy has credit in bridging a connection outside of your addiction. The components of the 12-Step Program in our Austin rehabilitation centers include:
- Admitting the control the addiction has over you
- Believing whichever higher power can guide you
- Grant permission for the higher power to take over
- Personal reflection through self-inventory
- Admitting the wrongdoings of your addiction to the higher power
- Embracing the higher power to fix these wrongdoings
- Asking the higher power to cleanse you of these wrongdoings
- Creating a list of those you hurt and the amends you’ll make
- Making contact with those you’ve hurt, unless it would cause more damage
- Embracing humility and practicing self-inventory
- Seeking enlightenment and intimacy with the higher power
- Pass on the knowledge of the steps to your peers
Despite being created for Alcoholics Anonymous, the positive experiences Wilson learned branched into Narcotics, Heroin, and Gambling Anonymous through the Big Book. The practice of the 12-Step Model encourages people to look after each other and themselves in the fight for abstinence. Group therapy sessions are meant for open communication and provide support for people at varying stages of recovery. The tools provided by the 12-Step Program prep those struggling with a sense of relief and enriches their mental health.

WHATS THE IMPORTANCE OF DETOX AND WHAT TO EXPECT AFTERWARDS
It’s been nine days since you’ve had a drink. You’ve struggled with alcohol addiction for four years, and the memories of drinking to escape flood you during detox. Detoxification is the first step of recovery because it targets the cleansing of the body from addictive substances. Since our brains are hardwired to repeat pleasurable experiences, the pathways for compulsive behaviors begin to form as a person makes a routine out of use.
Detoxification is vital because of the intensity a person might experience with withdrawals. Withdrawal symptoms vary; depending on the substance, frequency, and amount used. These symptoms can be quite uncomfortable, with some even leading to death if a patient is treated improperly for severe conditions. The intense healing of detox can only be successful by addressing how substances manipulate the chemicals in the body. Austin rehabilitation centers will typically offer detoxification treatment to begin the recovery process.
Whether it’s an inpatient or outpatient treatment program, detox treatments are provided by trained medical staff. Specific medications are available for those with mild to severe symptoms, such as suboxone and naltrexone. The support from the detoxification process usually ensures a steady healing outcome because self-detox is not as effective for treatment. It’s critical to research the facility you end up deciding on to receive the nuanced care for your needs. After detox, a patient can expect to receive additional care through a partial hospitalization or outpatient rehab, depending on their recovery stage.
WHAT ARE SOME LONG TERM SOLUTIONS IN ADDICTION RECOVERY?
The assumption with recovery is that it ends after a patient has been discharged from an addiction treatment program when that can be far from the case. Despite going through the detox and specialized therapies, the journey of recovery is exercised through self-accountability and discipline. Maintaining your relationships in your support network will be your North Star, as many triggers and dilemmas will creep back into your view. A different perspective from peers could inspire intense healing.
Long-term solutions in addiction recovery require a determination and understanding that relapse is possible. Long term solutions towards intense healing might come in forms like:
- Journaling can provide an excellent outlet for suppressed feelings and experiences in recovery.
- Hobbies like painting or music offer the self-esteem of finding joy outside of substances.
- Exercise or Team Sports provide active routines and discipline for everyday connections.
- Self Care, which is often overlooked, is designed to meet your needs when you’re overwhelmed.
- Group Therapy provides support when life becomes challenging during recovery.
- Spiritual Healing Therapy and Mindfulness bring awareness to your mental processes and aims to bring intimacy to higher powers.
- Maintaining your support system helps you keep in touch with your recovery and enables close ones to keep you accountable.
