Defects of Character

Weekly Focal Point: Defects of Character

“My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your biding. Amen.”

Defects of Character

By the time we get to Steps Six and Seven, we have a list of all defects of character that either our sponsor, spiritual advisor, or trusted friend has written down for us. These defects are things they see as getting in our way of the usefulness we have. At one point or another we used these defects to survive; however, taking on a new life with a new meaning in recovery, we came to the realization that these defects of character could no longer serve us. We must recognized how these defects once served us, but how they do not serve us now. We have to find the assets to these defects and put them into action. Remember, Steps Six and Seven are not a one time thing but a practice we bring into our lives everyday.

Questions for Our Consideration

  1. Am I willing to give all of my defects to my Higher Power, or are there still certain defects that I feel serve me?
  2. Am I saying my Seventh Step prayer daily?
  3. Am I using Steps Ten and Eleven to continue to see where my defects pop up or where new ones start?
